先週の月曜日が祝日のため、Amy’s Weekly Letterをお休みさせていただきました。今日はAmy’s Weekly Letter 第7号、Promise of the Soul (Part 3) をお届けします。
2月は醍醐千里さん作の「魂の約束」の英訳に挑戦しています。Part 1とPart 2をまだお読みになっていない方は前回と前々回のブログへどうぞ。
それでは、let’s enjoy the poem! 原文の日本語の下には私の英訳文です。

Promise of the Soul (translated by Amy)

できるだけ魂を光らせようと、毎日を送っていましたが、
I’ve lived each day trying to make my soul shine as much as possible,
ある日、私は少しだけ疲れてしまいました。
but one day, I felt a bit exhausted.
夢の中で私は、神様に会いました。
In my dream, I met God.
夢の中で私は、神様に聞いてみました。
In that dream, I asked Him.
神様、私はいつまで魂を磨けばいいのですか。
Dear God, how long do I need to keep brushing up my soul?
私の魂は、いつ完璧に美しくなるのですか。
When will my soul become perfectly beautiful?
神様は言いました。
He replied.
あなたは、あなたの最後のひと呼吸まで、
I’m telling you, until your last breath,
魂を磨きつづけなさい。
keep brushing up your soul.
みんなその約束をして、地上に生まれているのですよ。
Everybody had promised so before they were born on the Earth.
でも、神様、磨き終わらないうちに、
But, my dear God, what would happen if I couldn’t finish brushing up my soul
最後のひと呼吸がきたら、
before I took my last breath…
どうすればよいのですか。
What should I do then?
心配しなくて大丈夫。
Don’t need to worry, my child.
あなたの魂は、最後のひと呼吸のとき、
Your soul, at the moment of your very last breath,
必ず、最高の光を放ちます。
will definitely give off the best light.
神様、私にはその自信がないのです。
My dear God, I don’t have that confidence…
あなたは、毎日魂を磨いています。
Since you’re brushing up your soul every day,
だから大丈夫。
it’ll be all right.
最後のひと呼吸のとき、
When you take your last breath,
魂はそれまででいちばん美しい姿を見せてくれます。
your soul will show you the most glorious form ever.
何も心配いりませんよ。
There’s nothing to worry about.
あなたの魂は毎日、昨日より輝きを増しているのです。
Everyday your soul is shining brighter than the day before.
ときどき、自分の魂を、離れたところから見てごらんなさい。
Sometimes, take a look at your soul from a distance.
あなたの魂があなたの体を越えて、
It is transcending your body,
まわりに光を与えていることにも、
and shining light to the surroundings.
気づくことができるでしょう。
You can see that.
このごろでは、あなたの魂の輝きで、
These days, with the brilliance of your soul,
道を明るくする人も増えてきました。
the number of those who are lighting up their roads is increasing.
さぁ、戻って、魂を磨いてきなさい。
Now, go back, and keep brushing up your soul.
毎日を楽しくうれしく感謝の気持ちで送るのですよ。
Live each day with joy and gratitude.
そうするとあなたの魂は、キラキラと光を強くしていきます。
By doing so, you enhance the sparkling radiance of your soul.
あなたがここに来るのは、まだまだずっとずっと先。
The time for you to come here is still so far away.
あなたの人生を、楽しんでいらっしゃい。
Enjoy your life, my little child.
あなたがどんなに素晴らしい魂を持って、ここに帰ってくるか、
What wonderful soul you will bring back here,
私はそれを楽しみしています。
I’m looking forward to seeing it.
目が覚めた私は、
When I woke up,
それまで気づかなかったことに気づきました。
I realized something that I haven’t noticed before.
昨日より今日。
More than yesterday, today.
今日より明日。
More than today, tomorrow.
私の魂は輝きを増しつづけ、毎日楽しく生まれ変わります。
My soul increases its illumination and is happily reborn every day.
そして必ず、その日の魂がいちばん光る魂。
And surely, the soul that day is the most shining soul ever.
少しの努力、優しい気持ち。
A little effort, a kind heart.
そして、うれしいこと、楽しいこと。
And happy things, joyful things.
日々の中に散りばめられた美しいもの。
Beautiful things sprinkled throughout each day.
神様との約束を思い出したので、
Because now I could recall the promise I made with God,
私は、なんにも心配しないで、
毎日を送っていくことができそうです。
I feel like I can live each day from now on
without any more worries.
なんにも心配しなくても、
Without any more worries,
私の魂は、昨日より光ります。
my soul is shining brighter than the day before.
光りつづけます。
I know it’ll continue to shine.

今回の英訳においては新しい文法がありませんが、語彙 (vocabulary)についてちょっと触れておきたいです。
この詩には「輝き」という単語が何回も出てきましたね。英訳には複数な言葉で「輝き」を表現しました。単純な「光」という意味の場合は「light」に訳しましたが、強い光、キラキラとの輝きという意味の場合は illumination, radiance, brillianceと訳しました。これらの名詞は対応する形容詞または動詞がありますので、一緒に覚えておくと便利です。
- illumination (noun) – illuminate (verb)
- radiance (noun) – radiant (adjective)
- brilliance (noun) － brilliant (adjective)
ちなみに「キラキラの輝き」はここで「sparkling radiance」と訳しました。「sparkle」という動詞は「キラキラと輝く」意味です。
また、「美しい」という形容詞も何度も出ましたね。「美しい」は簡単に訳せば「beautiful」ですが、何回も出てきましたので時々言い換えとして「glorious」を使いました。「glorious」は「beautiful」より「とても美しい」という強い強度の意味合いがあります。
他に普段あまり見かけない動詞をご紹介します。
- transcend (verb): 〔限界などを〕超える、超越する
- sprinkle (verb): 〔～を〕まく、まき散らす、ちりばめる、点在させる、振りかける

英訳文には以下のように使いました。
「ときどき、自分の魂を、離れたところから見てごらんなさい。

気づくことができるでしょう。

最後に今回の英訳に出てきた一つのphrasal verbをご紹介します。
give off: to produce heat, light, a smell, or a gas (Cambridge Dictionary)
熱や光を放つことを表現するときに「give off」を使うのです。以上の英訳にはこのように使いました。
「あなたの魂は、最後のひと呼吸のとき、
Your soul, at the moment of your very last breath,
必ず、最高の光を放ちます。
will definitely give off the best light.」
